Why are Hostels so Popular?

A hostel is an establishment that offers lodging for travelers. Hostels are known as very affordable alternatives to hotels all over the world in the majority of countries.

Hostels started out in Germany in 1912. The primary idea on which the first hostel was built was that youngsters could work together to maintain a space where they would sleep and have their meals. This involved doing basic chores by themselves to avoid hiring a specialize staff and thus saving money. The “Youth Hostel” was created for people to explore the outdoors and having a roof over their heads that would be affordable enough for many to join the activities.

In today’s world hostels are the go to choice when it comes to lodging in a foreign country, especially for more youthful travelers that do not have very much money to spend or for backpackers that usually travel very light and want to experience every destination at its fullest. The defining feature of a hostel is their affordable nature which makes them very accessible to the general public.

In general hostels have a few rooms available, but the number is not very high. These rooms come equipped with bunk beds in order to fit more travelers. Sometimes they come with private rooms or can be divided according to gender. Separate dormitories of course come at a higher price than the crowded ones, but the difference is not high.

Other facilities offered by hostels include a bathroom and a kitchen. These differ in size depending on the establishment and some can come with more than one-two bathrooms. Sharing programs are customary in many hostels and include books or DVDs that guests can take advantage of in the living area, where TVs, internet connected computer, DVD players etc. are available.

Hostels are maintained by a small staff that in most cases consists of guests that stay for a longer period of time in exchange for their help. Making new acquaintances and socializing is an added benefit of hostels.
